Take part in a 5 day traditional Scottish highland hunt for two free ranging red stags the first week of September, 2008. This hunt will be filmed for possible inclusion on Jim’s existing show or as part of a new show we are considering for 2009, so please only consider this hunt if you are comfortable with being on camera.
This hunt is fairly unique in that it is specifically set up for couples. Unlike some destinations where non-hunting wives can come along but don’t really have anything to do, this outfitter has a full time guide that takes the wives out to see various areas of local interest while the husbands are out hunting during the day. In the evening everyone is expected to get cleaned up and have a nice dinner and drinks with the ladies back at the Scottish manor you will be staying at during your trip.
The guides will only pick the oldest stags that are beyond their breeding age for the hunters and they will have the heaviest horns of all the stags available (though not necessarily the longest tines). Although the stags here do not have the massive head gear of stags raised behind high fences in other areas of the world, they are truly world class trophies from a free range environment. Success on 2 stags is 100% here as long as the hunter is in decent physical shape.
In addition to the stag hunting, there is also exceptional brown trout fishing right at the manor you will be staying at and the outfitter has all the spinning equipment for clients to use free of charge (if you want to fly fish you should bring your own gear). There is also a boat on one of the lochs that can be used for those who want to get off shore and fish.
| Examples of the type of activities for your spouses during the day are as follows (their specific agenda may vary, but this will give you an idea) |
| Day 1 |
Visit Inverness town, Cawdor Castle and gardens |
| Day 2 |
Visit Fortwilliam, Caledonian Canal, Second World War Commando Memorial, Inverlochy Castle, Corran Ferry (photo opportunity) |
| Day 3 |
Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, up to historic Beauly village for shopping, Carrbridge to see old bridge, Aviemore, Ruthven Barracks (built in 1724). |
| Day 4 |
The battlefield of Culloden, Brodie Castle and gardens, Aldeam antiques at Nairn and Clava Cairns (4,000 years old burial cairns) |
| Day 5 |
Pitlochry, Blair Castle, House of Bruar - this is a very up-market shopping centre for good quality clothing |
| Day 6 |
Dalwhinnie Distillery, Kingussie and lunch in Newtonmore village. Saturday afternoon is the day when all the trophies would be brought over to the Lodge for photographs, so touring is done usually just in the morning and they get back to the Lodge at about 2 p.m. |
The hunt is for two free range red stags and the cost for all the lodging, food, trophy fees, gun import fees and personal liability insurance (required by law in Scotland) is $8500/couple. Not included in this price is airfare, lunch for the wives while out touring, tips, dip and crate fees, trophy shipment, taxidermy or caping of trophies ($150 per animal for shoulder mounts).
If you are looking to earn some points with your better half and get in a great hunt before things get rolling here in North America, this is a perfect opportunity to start the 2008 hunting season.
